Litany of the Passion of Jesus

The Litany of the Life and Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ has been a very popular litany for over four hundred years. It appears in several forms in many popular prayer books over the course of the last four centuries.

The Litany draws extensively from Scripture and is perhaps one of the most complete summaries of the birth, life, suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus that appears in prayer form.

The Litany has seen several forms over the years with various additions and deletions.  At one time there was an indulgence attached to the Litany by Pope Pius VII in 1820.

Litany of the Passion of Jesus

Lord, have mercy on us.

Christ, have mercy on us.

Lord, have mercy on us.

Christ, hear us.

Christ, graciously hear us.

God the Father of heaven, HAVE

MERCY ON US.

God the Son, Redeemer of the world,

God the Holy Spirit,

Holy Trinity, one God,

Jesus Christ, who for our redemption

came down from heaven, HAVE

MERCY ON US.

Jesus Christ, who was born of the glorious Virgin Mary,

Jesus Christ, who for us took the form of a servant,

Jesus Christ, who lay in the manger,

Jesus Christ, who did not disdain to weep as a sinner,

Jesus Christ, who macerated Your body with hunger and thirst,

Jesus Christ, who for us continued in prayer, even unto a bloody sweat;

Jesus Christ, who suffered Yourself to be betrayed with a kiss by Judas,

Jesus Christ, who was taken and cast down upon the ground,

Jesus Christ, who suffered Yourself to be led with Your hands bound behind Your back,

Jesus Christ, who was brought before the chief priests and falsely accused,

Jesus Christ, who was smitten on the face with blows and stripes,

Jesus Christ, who was mocked with diverse reproaches,

Jesus Christ who was delivered to Pilate,

Jesus Christ, who was tied to the pillar and scourged, even unto blood,

Jesus Christ, who was clothed with a purple garment by the soldiers,

Jesus Christ, who was crowned with hard and sharp thorns,

Jesus Christ, who so often heard those most cruel words: Away with Him, crucify Him,

Jesus Christ, who being wearied and burdened, bore the hard wood of the Cross,

Jesus Christ, who being lifted up on the Cross was made the companion of thieves,

Jesus Christ, who having Your hands and feet nailed to the cross, was blasphemed by those who passed by,

Jesus Christ, whose beautiful face was made as it were leprous,

Jesus Christ, who prayed to Your Father for those that crucified You, and graciously heard the thief upon the cross,

Jesus Christ, who recommended Your most dear Mother to St. John,

Jesus Christ, who was pierced with a spear and redeemed the world with Your own Blood,

Jesus Christ, who was laid in a sepulcher,

Jesus Christ, who rose from the dead the third day,

Jesus Christ, who forty days afterwards ascended into heaven,

Jesus Christ, who sits at the right hand of the Father,

Jesus Christ, who will come to judge the living and the dead,

Lamb of God, You take away the sins of the world,

spare us, O Lord.

Lamb of God, You take away the sins of the world,

graciously hear us, O Lord.

Lamb of God, You take away the sins of the world,

have mercy on us, O Lord.

Christ, hear us,

Christ, graciously hear us.

Lord, have mercy on us.

Christ, have mercy on us.

Lord, have mercy on us.

Our Father ....

Let Us Pray

We beseech you, O Lord Jesus Christ that the Blessed Virgin Mary may intercede for us with your clemency, both now and at the hour of our death, who at  the hour of your Passion had her most holy soul pierced through with the sword of sorrow. Amen.
