Poems:

Mother

Saint of the gutters
Companion of all
Teresa so little
Standing so tall

Sister of mercy
In a border of blue
Crown of Calcutta
So faithful and true

You cared, reaching down
Opening your door
Serving the strangers
Helping the poor

You looked in their eyes
Praying, Father above
And saw the Lord Jesus
In faces of love

O mother of many
O sister so small
O saint of salvation
Who answered God’s call

We love you and miss you
And long for the day
When we will be with you
In Heaven we pray

The U.S. post office will release in September a stamp honoring Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, known as Mother Teresa.

This stamp with an image of Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta uses a portrait that was painted by artist Thomas Blackshear II of Colorado Springs, Colo. It will go on sale on what would have been her 100th birthday, Aug. 26. (CNS photo/courtesy U.S. Postal Service)

Colorado artist created image of Mother Teresa used for postage stamp COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The commemorative stamp of Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta being issued by the U.S. Postal Service bears a Colorado Springs postmark, so to speak.

The stamp was designed by acclaimed artist Thomas Blackshear II, who along with his wife, Ami, has made his home in the area for more than 16 years.

The 44-cent stamp featuring the founder of the Missionaries of Charity will go on sale Aug. 26, what would have been her 100th birthday.

“Her humility and compassion, as well as her respect for the innate worth and dignity of humankind, inspired people of all ages and backgrounds to work on behalf of the world’s poorest populations,” the Postal Service said in announcing the stamp last December. It also noted that Mother Teresa was named an honorary U.S. citizen in 1996.

During his long and varied career, Blackshear has designed roughly 30 stamps for the Postal Service, painting everyone from civil rights activist Rosa Parks to boxer Joe Louis.

“The thing about a stamp is that, because it’s going to be reduced so much, you have to design it in such a way that it’s instantly recognizable. It has to have that graphic quality,” Blackshear said.

Using photographs of the late nun, Blackshear painted three different portraits of Mother Teresa and submitted them to the Postal Service’s art committee.

Although the stamp was just one of many projects Blackshear has done for the Postal Service, some aspects of Mother Teresa’s life distinctly resonate with the artist - in particular the idea that God has a specific mission for each person. A member of New Life Church in northern Colorado Springs, Blackshear said that his Christian art is not only a career, but a calling from God.

“It’s more than art - it’s a ministry,” he told The Colorado Catholic Herald, newspaper of the Colorado Springs Diocese. “There have been many times that I’ve heard that a painting that I’ve done has influenced or affected people in ways that are not the norm.”

Growing up in Atlanta, Blackshear showed artistic talent at an early age. He won a scholarship to the Art Institute of Chicago, later transferring to the nearby Academy of Art. Upon graduation from art school, he went to work for the greeting card company Hallmark, launching a successful career in commercial artwork.

His focus eventually turned more toward sculpture and fine art. He designed a popular line of African-American sculptures called “Ebony Visions,” with which he is still involved. Much of his artwork has been reproduced by Lenox Co. for plates and other collectibles.

It was when he started painting Christian themes that Blackshear said he found his true mission, however.

“Back in the late 1980s, God had someone approach me about doing Christian art. That’s when everything kind of changed. I did this painting for DaySpring greeting cards called ‘Forgiven.’ That’s probably the most well-known painting that I’ve done,” Blackshear said.

The painting depicts Christ with his arms around a modern-day man who holds a hammer in one hand and a spike in the other, illustrating that even though one’s sins nail Jesus to the cross, his mercy is always there, Blackshear said.

Other Christian-themed paintings by Blackshear include “Coat of Many Colors, Lord of All,” a picture of Christ in a robe made up of flags and fabrics from around the world; “Watchers in the Night,” which depicts a guardian angel standing over a sleeping boy; and “Night in Day,” a painting of a black figure wrapped in a brilliant white cloak.

Blackshear said that “Night in Day” came directly from a vision given to him by God.

Over the past several years, Blackshear said he had struggled to come up with new ideas for paintings. Last summer, however, he was inspired to go on a 40-day fast at the urging of a friend.

Once the fast ended, he got a wealth of fresh ideas, sparking a new line of Christian-themed paintings he tentatively calls “Wings” because angels are featured prominently. Blackshear said he hopes to have five new paintings done by the end of the year.

When the Postal Service announced it would be issuing a stamp of Mother Teresa, some groups protested the decision on the grounds that a government agency should not be honoring a religious figure, but Blackshear dismissed the criticism.

“Look at what the woman did. There is nobody in the 20th century that comes close to the kind of life that woman led, and all the people that she helped. So why in the world would they make a big stink about something like that? It’s ridiculous,” he said.

Mother Teresa’s 100th Birthday Commemorated on New 5 oz Gold Euro Coin

Pope John Paul II embraces Mother Teresa on the new 5 oz. pure gold 500 Euro commemorative coin issued by France to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of this beloved Nobel Peace Prize winner. This memorable moment took place on February 2, 1986, during a visit of the Pontiff to the Missionaries of Charities order, in Calcutta.

When the pontiff arrived at the two-storey building in the heart of the city’s slums, he kissed the top of her head and she took him into the home she founded in 1950 called Nirmal Hriday, or Sacred Heart to tend to the needs of those suffering from cancer, tuberculosis or malnutrition. During his visit, the Pope helped the nuns to feed the sick and dying and was visibly moved by what he saw.

Mother Teresa, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 and was regarded as a living saint, said the Pope’s visit was “the happiest day of my life”. The obverse quote by Mother Teresa can be translated as: “In our house there is always a bed ready for one more child ("Chez nous, il y a toujours un lit prêt pour un enfant de plus"),” and features Mother Teresa lovingly holding a young boy.

These are the four Mother Teresa collector coins that the Monnaie de Paris will issue:
€10 (Ag (22.2 g) mintage 20,000
€50 (Au 1/4 oz) mintage 1,000
€200 (Au 1 oz) mintage 500
€500 (Au 5 oz) mintage 99
They are all proof-only coins, none of them will be available at face.

Mother Teresa, born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu, in Skopje, August 26, 1910 - Kolkata, and died on September 5, 1997) was a nun of Albanian Catholic faith, founder of the religious congregation of the Missionaries of Charity. Her work among the victims of poverty in Calcutta made her one of the most famous people in the world. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, and October 19, 2003 was proclaimed blessed by Pope John Paul II.

Mother Teresa (1910-1997) came from an Albanian family and had an early desire to become a nun. She joined the Irish Loreto Order and went to Calcutta, there to teach children. Peace Bridge on Niagara River to honor Mother Teresa’s birthday in lights

Peace Bridge on Niagara River to honor Mother Teresa’s birthday in lights, Buffalo, N.Y.

Buffalo, N.Y. Aug 4, 2010 (CNA).- In honor of the 100th birthday of Bl. Mother Teresa, on Aug. 26 the Peace Bridge spanning the Niagara River will be illuminated with blue and white, the colors of the Missionaries of Charity. The lighting of the bridge, which connects Buffalo and Fort Erie, will be a “beautiful tribute” to the missionary, a local bishop said.

Bishop of Buffalo Edward U. Kmiec and Msgr. Wayne Kirkpatrick, administrator of the Canadian Diocese of St. Catharines, jointly requested the action from the Peace Bridge Authority.

“Blessed Mother Teresa was truly a child of the light whose life was a shining example of Christ our Light reaching out to people everywhere promoting love and peace in our world,” commented Msgr. Kirkpatrick. “The lighting of this bridge which spans two dioceses and two countries, symbolizes her light reaching out across the great chasm to all people.”

Bishop Kmiec said the action is a “beautiful tribute” to Mother Teresa.

“Her missionary spirit lives on through the countless lives she touched, and I am grateful that this unique structure will pay tribute to her on this special occasion,” the bishop commented. “This is symbolic in that Blessed Mother Teresa’s light continues to shine around the world.”

Mother Teresa’s service to the poor in India won worldwide admiration. The sisters of her order, the Missionaries of Charity, serve in Canada, the U.S. and around the world in homes for the dying, in orphanages and in hospitals.

At present the Vatican is considering Mother Teresa’s cause for sainthood. The bridge’s lighting system is controlled by sophisticated software that allows unlimited color options, timings and themes, the Diocese of Buffalo reports. It has special color schemes for American and Canadian national holidays, sports team home games, and days such as Halloween.

The lighting system operates from 9 p.m. until 1 a.m. and from 5 a.m. to 6 a.m.

The Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights submitted a request that the Empire State Building in New York City also honor Mother Teresa’s birthday with a lighting scheme in the blue and white of the Missionaries of Charity. The denial of the request prompted protests.

Markowitz To Light Borough Hall To Honor Mother Teresa’s Birth

To Light Borough Hall To Honor Mother Teresa’s Birth

BOROUGH HALL — On Wednesday, August 25, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz will welcome members of the Catholic community and other elected officials as Brooklyn Borough Hall is lit in blue and white on the eve of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Mother Teresa.

Markowitz announced in June that Borough Hall would be illuminated in the colors of Mother Teresa’s religious order after the owners of the Empire State Building stated a similar honor would not take place at New York City’s tallest building. “We are proud to honor the life and legacy of Mother Teresa at Borough Hall,” said BP Markowitz.

“Borough Hall may not be as tall as the Empire State Building, but it is Brooklyn’s oldest public building — and one of the oldest in New York City — and what better place than our diverse borough to celebrate not only Mother Teresa but people and groups of all faiths — including Brooklyn’s large Catholic community — who have made great contributions to the world.”

In addition to annual lightings for holidays such as St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, July 4th, Halloween, Christmas and Hanukkah, Borough Hall has been lit to observe other events and organizations, including the Papal visit, the American Heart Association and March of Dimes, as well as LGBT Gay Pride and celebrations of Haitian, Turkish, Israeli, Asian, Lebanese, Greek, Italian, Polish and Caribbean heritage. Borough Hall will remain lit from the evening of August 25 through the weekend of the 28th – 29th.

Posters have appeared in churches and senior citizen centers around Hoboken in honor of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Mother Teresa.

Agnes Gonxha Bojaxiu would have turned 100 years old on August 26th and the world may not have noticed if she had not become known simply as Mother Teresa of Calcutta.

In preparation for the 100th anniversary of her birth, posters have begun appearing around the city of Hoboken displaying the face of the Catholic nun and Nobel Peace Prize winner that many are sure to recognize. The poster was designed by New Jersey-based graphic artist Joseph A. Corrado and commissioned by Gregory Dell'Aquila, owner of the Hoboken Business Center.

A Catholic himself, Dell'Aquila hopes the posters will inspire people to honor the well-known humanitarian, regardless of religious affiliation. "That's the thing that's so powerful," said Dell'Aquila. "That anyone from any religion knows of Mother Teresa as this person on earth that went across all boundaries of religion. To honor her is only right."

Dell'Aquila was particularly inspired to print and distribute over 1,500 posters to Hoboken area churches and senior citizen centers by the recent controversy involving the Empire State Building. In June, the Manhattan landmark declined a request by the Catholic League to light the building with blue and white lights - reminiscent of Mother Teresa's habit distinctive of her order, Missionaries of Charity - to commemorate her century birthday.

"You hear something like this and you're like, 'Wow,'" said Dell'Aquila. "They lit up the Empire State Building for the Rotary organization on its 100th birthday... And here you have Mother Teresa who I think everybody in the world recognizes as a modern-day saint and they don't want to light the building up."

Additional posters are available for distribution at churches around Hoboken including Saint Francis, Saint Ann's, Our Lady of Grace, and Saints Peter and Paul.
